Rui Costa fa la storia: la numero 1 del Team UAE è tua!

Non avrebbe potuto che essere un campione, quale è l’iridato di Firenze 2013 Rui Costa, a ottenere la prima vittoria della storia del Team UAE.

A 23 giorni di distanza dalla conferenza di lancio della squadra emiratina, tenutasi ad Abu Dhabi il 3 gennaio, nella quale Rui Costa aveva spiegato di voler regalare numerose soddisfazioni al presidente Matar e agli Emirati Arabi Uniti, il talentuoso portoghese ha colto da vero “numero 1” uno storico successo nell’arrivo in salita della 4^tappa della Vuelta de San Juan (foto Bettini).

Sul traguardo dell’Alto Colorado, al termine di 164,2 km che dopo il via da Chimbas hanno proposto in serie le salite dell’Alto de Villicum (3^categoria, 56 km dal via, 1070 mt di altitudine), del Banos de Talaca (2^categoria, 100 km, 1400 mt di altitudine) e dell’Alto de la Crucecita (2^categoria, 114,7 km, 1752 mt di altitudine), Rui Costa ha messo in fila nell’ordine Torres (+2″), Escuela (+7″), Sevilla (+10″) e il nuovo leader della classifica generale Mollema (+12″).

Il portoghese del Team UAE ha sgretolato la resistenza degli avversari grazie a una pedalata molto fluida in salita, che gli ha permesso di rimanere in testa alla corsa assieme a Torres, Escuela, Sevilla e Mollema e di involarsi verso il traguardo con Torres, regolandolo allo sprint e ottenendo il 23° successo da professionista.
“E’ una vittoria dal sapore particolare, dal doppio risvolto: mi rende personalmente felice perché arriva dopo un 2016 nel quale il successo era sfuggito, spesso per poco, e mi rende orgoglioso per la gioia che ho regalato al Team UAE e a tutti gli sponsor – ha commentato Rui Costa – Mi gusto il piacere della vittoria anche perché è giunta al termine di una tappa molto impegnativa, corsa ad alta quota e con le insidie date dal caldo e dal vento.

Ho trovato un gruppo di avversari molto ostici, nel finale serpeggiava la stanchezza, ma la voglia di primeggiare era diffusa e, di conseguenza, la lotta intensa.
Ho cercato di spendere bene ogni mia energia, così mi sono ritrovato a contare su una pedalata efficace nell’ultimo chilometro.
Torres non ha mollato fino alla fine, quando ho visto che non avrebbe potuto più insidiarmi ho provato una grande felicità”.

I corridori del Team UAE e le bici Colnago C60 non sono stati protagonisti solo sul traguardo, ma hanno animato la tappa sin dalle prime fasi.
Niemiec ha fatto parte di un’azione di 18 corridori che ha condotto la gara in avvio di tappa, poi, una volta annulata questa fuga, dal gruppo sono fuoriusciti altri 18 atleti, comprendenti anche la coppia “verde” del Team UAE, ovvero Ganna e Troia. Anche questo attacco è stato successivamente raggiunto dal gruppo dei migliori scalatori.

Oltre al successo di tappa, Rui Costa può essere soddisfatto anche per il notevole balzo in classifica generale, nella quale occupa ora il 5° posto (era 22°) a 26″ da Mollema (due frazioni per velocisti al termine della Vuelta de San Juan).

Who else could have obtained the victory “number 1″ in Team UAE’s history but the world champion in Florence 2013 Rui Costa?

23 days after the press conference which launched the activity of the team, where the Portuguese rider stated that his goal was to give as many satisfactions as possible to the president of the team Matar and to the United Arab Emirates, Rui Costa won the 4th stage of the Vuelta de San Juan (photo Bettini).

On the summit arrival on the Alto Colorado, at the end of a course of 162,4 km of distance (start from Chimbas) and after the ascents of the Alto de Villicum (3rd category, 56 km in the race, 1070 mt altitude), of the Banos de Talaca (2nd category, 100 km, 1400 mt altitude) and of the Alto de la Crucecita (2nd category, 114,7 km, 1752 mt altitude), Rui Costa preceded Torres (+2″), Escuela (+7″), Sevilla (+10″) and the new leader of the general classification Mollema (+12”).

The Portuguese from Team UAE was brilliant on the final climb and he could be in the selected leading group with Torres, Escuela, Sevilla and Mollema; he preceded Torres in a sprint, obtaining the 23rd victory as pro.

“This victory has a special taste and it makes me doubly happy: I’m very satisfied to have obtain a succees after the 2016 season during which I was several times close to the first place and I’m glad I could give to Team UAE and to the sponsors the first historic victory – Rui Costa explained – This succees in very special also because it was not easy to obtain, considering that the stage was very demanding, we raced at a high altitude and we faced the wind and the heat.

The opponents were very competitive, in the final kilometers the energies were almost over for everybody, however I managed to still have strong legs in the last kilometer and I could reach the final meters with Torres, beating him in the sprint: I was so happy when I realized he could not follow me”.

Team UAE’s cyclists and their Colnago C60 bikes were protagonist also before the final climb, when Niemiec joined the first breakaway of the stage with other 17 riders.
Their action was later neutralized and two other cyclists from the Emirati team (Ganna and Troia) attacked, pedaling in the new leading group of 18 riders.
The peloton bridged the gap before the final climb.

In the general classification, Rui Costa is 5th (he was 22nd before the stage) at 26″ to Mollema. Still two staged suitable for sprinters to the end of the Vuelta de San Juan.
